Medical Services Plan of BC - Premium Assistance

In British Columbia, the amount you pay for medical coverage is based on family size and income.

From January to December 2010 monthly rates are $57 for one person, $102 for a family of two and $114 for a family of three or more. Effective January 2011, monthly rates are $60.50 for one person, $109 for a family of two and $121 for a family of three or more.

There are two types of assistance to pay your medical premiums: regular and temporary.

Regular Premium Assistance

Regular premium assistance offers subsidies ranging from 20% to 100%, based on an individual's net income (or a couple's combined net income) for the preceding tax year, less deductions for age, family size and disability. Rates can be found here: www.health.gov.bc.ca/msp/infoben/premium.html

Temporary Premium Assistance

Temporary premium assistance offers a 100% subsidy for a short term based on unexpected financial hardship.
